Pencil Sharpener Giveaway and 1st Week 5 for Friday (Late)

Week one of school is over.  Boy, it's amazing how exhausting it is going back to school.  I was dead tired every night this week.

Thankfully, I got to sleep in some today, even though my body still wanted me to wake up at 6:00 a.m.  Ugh.

Anyways, I am excited to share a bit about my first week via Doodle Bug's cute 5 for Friday linky.  I know I'm late, but hey, it was the first week of school.

All About Me Bags

To help the students get to know each other, they all brought in All About Me bags filled with 5 items that told something about themselves.  The kids had a blast sharing and were excited to discover things they had in common with their classmates.

You can find a cute All About Me bag freebie from Fun in First.

Exploring Numbers

Students began exploring numbers to ten this week.  The first few lessons of Math in Focus are extremely basic, but it's important to build a solid foundation of number sense before moving on to more complex math.  Therefore, we spent several days building numbers on tens frames.

Also, we began to practice writing our numbers correctly using this cute Number Writing Poem.  I don't really know the original source and there are tons of variations, so here is a Pinterest search where you can find further inspiration.

Puzzle Piece Craft

My firsties also enjoyed decorate personalized puzzle pieces for our "We All Fit in First Grade" bulletin board.  I love using this craft/board to get the students talking about how we are all different, yet we need each other.  Each student brings something valuable to the class.  If we are missing a piece, we are not the same.

Introduction to Read to Self

We began the Daily 5 with Read to Self using Lori's adorable FREE posters as anchor charts.  So far, our stamina is only about 4 minutes, but hopefully it will begin to build next week.

Bucket Filling

This year my school has become a "Bucket Filling" school.  I am super excited about this initiative because I think it is so important to teach children to be kind to others.  After reading the cute book by Carol McCloud, I used the following resources to introduce this concept to my kiddos.

Also, I plan to try out Christina's Daily Bucket Filler Jar idea.  Click the link or the picture to get her freebies.

And now...in celebration of making it through my first week of school, I am excited to be hosting a...
